The protagonists in each story are trapped in a world of ignorance because each is comfortable in the dark, and fearful of what knowledge a light might bring. They are reluctant to venture into unfamiliar territory. Fortunately the narrator in the Cathedral is forced by circumstances to take a risk. This risk leads him into new world of insight and understanding. The narrator in The Cathedral begins the story with the issue of hesitation in seeing the light. The light in this story just like the light in Platos Myth of the Cave represents reality. The narrator expresses the fear of expressing reality when he said I wasnt enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me. My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed. Sometimes they were led by seeing eye-dogs. A blind man in my house was not something I look forward to. (Page 98). The narrator felt that being blind was like being in a type of prison and the preconceived notion of self-imprisonment was frightening to him. He felt that blindness was exactly like being a prisoner in Platos Cave, a scary world where no light ever penetrated. Unfortunately, the husband is imprisoned in his own ignorance. His view of blindness had come from Hollywoods portrayal of blind people. As far as he is concerned, his situ ation is completely normal. He knows there are lots of people just like him. In The Cathedral the extent of the husbands ignorance or naivet is extremely irritating. When his wife tells him the beautiful story of the blind mans romantic relationship with his wife Beulah, all he could think of is What a pitiful life this woman must have led. Imagine a woman who could never see herself as she was seen in the eyes of her loved one. A woman who could on day after day and never see the smallest compliment from her beloved. A woman whose husband could never read the expression on her face, be it misery or something better. (Page 100). But the blind man had sight in the form of intuitiveness. This sight gave him greater vision than the sighted man. The blind man had a sense of and source of reality in the truth and strength of the relationship. This man was unlike the prisoners in the cave. The humans in the cave had no such reality. No love warmth or human contact. The prisoners in the cave had no knowledge of those things. The fire and the shadow provided the only reality for them. This was their source of knowledge and their source of contact with the world. For these people their cave life and their ignorance created a world worse than the blind mans. Unknown to the prisoners in the cave an elevated causeway crosses through the cave. The prisoners do not know where this road will lead them. In Carvers Cathedral, the narrator did not realize that the blind man was in his causeway out of ignorance. He did not realize that the simple act of his wife inviting the blind guest would lead to major new discoveries about himself and his ignorance. The narrators wife has been exposed to knowledge, which is what Robert represents in this story, for many years. She was more aware of the world because of her relationship with Robert. This exposure was instrumental in presenting her husband with a learning opportunity. Her husband was given the opportunity to see the light. This was territory into which he would have never ventured on his own. His fears from his own cave prevented such risky behavior. The 2011- 2012 annual review reported that Beat directly helped over 10,000 individuals across the UK in that single year and they logged 1,871,423 visits to their website (Outram and Ringwood, 2012). Strategy Theorists have produced an array of varying strategy definitions; Johnson, Scholes and Whittington (2010) state that, strateg y encompasses â€Å"the direction and scope of an organisation over the long term, which achieves advantage in a changing environment†. Strategy is concerned primarily with two factors; organisations internal resources and its external environment and ultimately the linkage of these to optimise positioning. Largely, strategy utilises the future vision of the organisation, its sustainability and its growth opportunities (Carter, 2012). A key challenge in strategic implementation is how to create value and continue to do so in an incessantly developing industry states Carter (2012). He adds that for survival, as a necessity, a firm must add value to its inputs, whether through marketing processes or operational processes. This holistic view of the organisation assists in the development of distinctiveness through the establishment of a competitive advantage (Carter, 2012). This report will execute both an internal and external analysis of the charity, Beat; in terms of its posi tioning to provide reinforcement for possible strategic growth opportunities. In this regard, it is argued that the employer has a particular privilege in making the defamatory statement. Further, there are two types of privilege: absolute privilege and conditional privilege. When an employer has an absolute privilege regarding their comment about former employees it implies that the employer has complete protection irrespective of the motive of communication. It was suggested that those who do not posses TOM were the victims of autism. (Tirapu-Ustarroz et. al. 2007) Other scientists suggest that what separates mankind from primates is that mankind possesses a â€Å"species-specific set of social cognitive skills† (Herman et. al. 2007). Arguably that covers a broader range than TOM but it encompasses it, uniting these scientists under one front. However, some scientists say that chimpanzees do indeed possess TOM. By showing a chimpanzee a series of video tapes of humans in situations that lacked a solution, and then presenting several different photos, one with a solution to the problem, it was shown that chimpanzees do indeed possess a version of TOM. For example, the chimpanzee was shown a video of a phonograph, unable to play because it was unplugged. The chimpanzee then chose the photo of a plugged in phonograph as a solution (Premack and Woodruff 1978). Similarly, others continue to suggest that we are not so very different from other primates. In an article titled Humans Have Evolved Specialized Skills of Social Cognition: The Cultural Intelligence Hypothesis results it is suggested that it is not â€Å"general intelligence† that separates us from other animals, it is the level of sophistication and maturity of our cognitive skills. In fact, 2. 5 year old children did not differ from chimpanzees significantly in cognitive skills , specifically those used to assess the physical world (Herman et. al. 2007). In the science world, it has long been debated at what age TOM is developed. Is TOM developed relatively late in childhood (age four) or as early as 7 months? The scientific community is split. There are those that suggest that TOM is developed at age four. And still those that say TOM is innate and can be seen relatively early in child development, it is just undetectable unless a nonverbal false-belief task is assumed (Onishi and Baillargeon 2005). In The Social Sense: Susceptibility to Others’ Beliefs in Human Infants and Adults scientists explore exactly this topic. False belief tasks : Adults vs. infants This article focuses on the differences and similarities of 7 month olds, 3 year olds, and adults in their reaction to several different false-belief tasks. A false belief task is a test, usually using a video or pictures, involving an agent and a participant. The agent is the person watching the video and reacting to it. The participant is the person in the video that is actually doing a task. (Kovacs 2010) There were seven experiments performed in order to reach a conclusion to a compounded hypothesis how do other’s beliefs affect the actions of an individual when the agent is present and absent. Furthermore, how early is this ability developed and to what extent does it differ between individuals, specifically 7 month olds, versus adults. If TOM is innate, it hould be as automatic as our response to our physical environment. This is also explored. (Kovacs 2010) In the first experiment, adults watched a series of videos of a ball and an occluder. In each video, the ball either stayed behind the occluder, rolled off the screen in front of the agent only, or rolled away in front of the agent and participant. The adults watching ar e the agents. The people in the video are the participants. After each video, either the participant and the agent both believed the ball to be behind the occluder, both believed it to have rolled away, or have conflicting beliefs. This is an example of a false-belief task. Then they measured the reaction times of the participants detecting the ball in each situation. The presence of an agent had nothing to do with the task, however, it affected the reaction time of participants. (Kovacs 2010) In Experiment 2, in the last scene of the movie, a pile of boxes was in place of an agent. Surprisingly, the results were the same as experiment one. This shows that the agents beliefs were stored and still affected the behavior of the participant. The participants found the ball quickly when both they and the agent believed it to be behind the occluder. Kovacs 2010) Experiment 3 was performed to show further strengthen the results found in Experiment 1 and 2. Experiment 4-7 were the same as Experiments 1-3 but used infants and looking times versus reaction times. Each subsequent experiment was performed to further solidify the results of the previous experiment. (Kovacs 2010) Conclusion So, to answer the initial question as to how we differ from our primate relatives and when we develop this ability, all pertinent information seems to suggest that TOM is indeed a major distinguisher, and that this innate ability is detectable as early as 7 months of age. Why this matters The results of this experiment are ground-breaking. For decades, scientist have said that TOM is developed at age four. But if TOM is innate and not learned, this reveals a peek into the social structure of mankind. It leads to answers to questions like why we act the way we do in society, and how we evolved into who we are today. It also provides a nonverbal false-belief task that can be performed on infants. This means it can also be performed on other primates, and maybe even those with brain damage that provides them incapable of speaking. With this, we can investigate whether TOM is affected by certain types of brain damage, and if it is specified to one location in the brain. We can identify the absence of TOM in certain patients with certain diseases which would allow us to draw certain conclusions about the disease itself. Richard Warren Sears and Sears, Roebuck, & Company Richard Warren Sears was born on December 7, 1863, in Stewartville, Minnesota. He was the son of James Warren and Eliza A. Sears, both of English ancestory. His father led anything but a happy life. He had failed in his quest for gold during the California Gold Rush of 1849 and was a bitter soldier in the Civil War, which he blamed on politicians. He had earned a sizable sum of money working as a blacksmith and a wagonmaker, but he lost it all in a stock-farm venture. Richard's father gave up soon afterwards, leaving Richard to be the family breadwinner at the age of 16. Richard worked in the general offices of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway in Minneapolis to support his family. He then decided to move Redwood Falls, Minnesota, where he thought that he could earn more money because of the small town setting. There he worked as a station attendant, doing chores for his board and sleeping in the loft of the railroad station. In his spare time, he learned how the mail-order business worked. Richard got his opportunity to get into the mail-order business in 1886 when a shipment of watches from a Chicago wholesaler was refused by a town jeweler. Therefore, the shipment sat in the railroad station until Richard contacted the wholesaler, who offered him the watches for twelve dollars each. He bought the watches and sold them by sending letters to other station attendants describing the watches and offering them at the discount price of fourteen dollars each. He sold those watches and ordered more to sell. To sell these he advertised in a small way in St. Paul newspapers. He made a large profit from this operation. In a few months Richard made such a profit that he abandoned the railroad business entirely and started his own mail-order business under the name of the R.W. Sears Watch Company. In one year he made so much money that he was able to begin advertising in magazines with a national circulation and move the business to Chicago. On March 1, 1887, he set up a shop on Dearborn Street in Chicago with a staff of three people, one to handle bookkeeping and correspondence and two stenographers. Soon after the opening of his new shop, he found a need for a watchmaker to repair watches returned by customers. This watchmaker was a young man by the name of Alvah Curtis Roebuck from Hammond, Indiana. Richard Sears became even more successful by opening up the huge rural market.

How Many Extracurricular Activities Do You Need SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips You’ve been working hard in high school to get good grades and test scores, but there’s another part of the college application that many students find more confusing: the extracurricular activity section. How many extracurricular activities do you need for college applications? How many are too many? Will you get rejected from a school if you don’t have the right amount? Many students who have participated in activities throughout high school are shockedto look at the Common App and realize there are ten spaces to fill out. Does that mean you have to be involved in ten different activities? In this article I will tell you: The important things colleges need to see in your extracurriculars The ideal amount of extracurricular activities The minimum amount of extracurriculars you can have What to do if you have no extracurriculars What to do if you have too many extracurriculars What Colleges Want to See in Your Activities Before we talk about exactly how many activities you need, let’s discusswhy extracurricular activities are important in the first place and what colleges are hoping to learn about you through your activities. Extracurriculars are one of the most important ways that colleges can learn about who you are as a person and if you will be a good fit on their campus. Why? These activities show admissions officers many of the â€Å"intangibles† that they are looking for in their students. For example, your extracurriculars show admission officers if you can balance your schedule, if you can commit to an activity, the extent to which you can lead or improve something, and what makes you tick. There are three main things that collegesare looking for inyour activities: Dedication: Instead of seeing you jump around from activity to activity, colleges would far prefer to see you dedicate a significant amount of time over an extended period (a few years) to one particular activity. This showsyour willingness to make a commitment and yourpassion for what you are doing. Leadership: Admissions officers like to see students take control in their activities and show off their leadership skills. This could include things like founding a club, increasingparticipation in an activity, or leading a project like a fundraiser. Universities hope that someday their students will go on to be leaders on a larger scale in the community, and these activities are a good way for them to gauge if you have the interest and ability to do that. Lasting Impact: This ties in with the previous idea. Admission officers like students who are going to make a difference in the world and leave it better than they found it. So if you are someone who has done just that in an activity, they are going to be more likely to think that you are the type of student they want on their campus. Did you do something to improve a club or organization you belonged to? Did you streamline a process or innovate how your activity is done? Did you leave something better than you found it? Now that you understand what colleges are hoping to glean about you through your activities let’s see just how many of them you need in order to show off these qualities. What’s the ideal amount of activities you’ll need in order to impress admissions officers? How Many â€Å"Normal† Activities Should Students Have? The Goldilocks â€Å"just right† number of activities is 5 or6. This is a good amount because it's achievable for most students without being overwhelming. Fewer activities than this can show a lack of willingness to branch out and try something new, while having way more than 6 activities is unsustainable for most students. When colleges see students who have 10 or more activities, they will likely assume that you either padded your resume, or that you only showed up to your activities instead of making a real effort to be significantly involved. In your freshman year, try out a lot of different activities to see what you're the most passionate about. In sophomore year and beyond, start whittling down your activities so that you're left with the ones you can really make an impact in.These activities can be almost anything – clubs in your school or community, sports, art, hobbies, or community service. The key is to choose one or two activities that you will focus most of your time on. In these activities, you should be investing a significant amount of time every week. "Significant time," of course, can be interpreted differently depending on what activity you are doing. In general, between 5 and 10 hours per week for each main activity is a good benchmark, depending on how many activities you are involved in and how much time you devote to other responsibilities. (Remember to never let your academics suffer at the expense of extracurriculars!) Duringyour last years of high school, make sure that you show growth or development in these activities and try to take on a leadership role, or at least lead some initiatives. Take note of some specific accomplishments that you are proud of (don’t be too humble) andcan write about on your application – specific details about your achievementswill make your hard work much more impressive to colleges. Round yourself out with a few secondary activities. You won’t be spending as much time on these, so they should be things that you can have fun with and not have to stress about. On your college applications, these activities will help round you out as a person and show aspects of your personality that may not be visible in your main activities. For example, if your main activities are competing in Science Bowl competitions and doingresearch at a local college, having something like a stand-up comedy club on your application could show a completely different side of you. Keep in mind that the main thing is to pursue activities that you are really passionate about. College admissions advisors care much more about getting a good idea of who you are and why you have pursued certain activities than reading a list of activities you couldn’t care less about but thought would sound good on an application. Though 5 – 6 is the most ideal amount, that’s not to say that some students don’t do well with fewer activities – sometimes significantly fewer! What’s the Minimum Number of Extracurriculars I Need for a Competitive School? Surprisingly, you only really need one extracurricular activity, even for a competitive school like Harvard. However, if that’s all you’re going to have, it had better be one very impressive activity that shows your growth, leadership, and impact. You will also need to show that you have been significantly involved in the activity all throughout high school. As an example, let me tell you about a student I knew at college. The summer before her freshman year, she went with her family on vacation to Malaysia, where she was enchanted by the beautiful shawls local artisans made. She realized that many of the artists who produce these pieces were being underpaid for their work. On returning home, she decided to take some classes at the local community college in business and web development and then launched a non-profit company that allows people to purchase these kinds of goods directly from the artisans abroad.Over the next four years, she expanded the business to reach artists in several countries and hired a couple of employees to help her do the work. This kind of activity shows initiative, leadership, dedication, maturity, and passion – which areeach qualitiesthat admissions officers are looking for. Additionally, something of this magnitude would take up pretty much all of your time and not leave a lot of room for other activities. If you only have one activity of this magnitude, you should run with it and not worry about the blank spaces on your application. But is one really the minimum amount of activities you can have? What if you don’t have any at all? Can I Get Away With Having No Extracurricular Activities? The short answer to this question is yes; you can get away with having no extracurricular activities. Some lower-ranked schools completely base their admissions decisions off GPA and test scores. Additionally, there are several state schools that admit a percentage of students entirely based on the same criteria - ignoring extras such as your activities. For example, the University of California system guarantees admission to one of its campuses to all students who are in the top 9% of California high school students. If you have no activities, it's a good idea to check your state school system and see if it has a similar plan. Finally, if you have spent your free time in high school doing something productive such as taking extra classes at your local community college, you may find that schools will also look well on that and be willing to admit you despite a lack of extracurriculars. However,you may not want to go down these paths if you can at all avoid it. While you will almost certainly be eligible for some schools without extracurriculars, they may not necessarily be the schools you were hoping for. Unless you have serious extenuating circumstances, most colleges will look at a complete lack of extracurricular activities with disapproval. A student with no activities often ends up looking lazy, unmotivated, and afraid to leave his or her comfort zone. Therefore, studentswith no extracurriculars will not be competitive at most schools. Furthermore, you will be automatically eliminating yourself from the running for loads of merit- and activity-based scholarships, which are often dependent on your extracurricular activities.If you aren't sure if your after-school activities count as extracurriculars, or if you currently have no extracurriculars and don’t know what to do, see our guide. But what if you have the opposite issue? Is it possible to have too many extracurricular activities? Thereareonly ten spaces for activities on the Common App. What if you have more than that? What If I Have Way More Than Ten Activities? If you have more than ten activities, you do not needto list all of them. In fact, on this part of the application, you can make a good argument that less is more. Instead of having a long list of activities, it’s much more important to be able to show significant involvement in a few activities. Use the Common App to showcase what you consider to be your best activities. Choose the activities that you are most passionate about, have helped you mature and develop skills, have allowed you to make a lasting impact, and that youhave spent the most time doing. This will look different for every student. Some students are genuinely invested in several activities. If that’s the case, then you should list them all. However,most students will only have a couple activities that they have really dedicated themselves to. Keep in mind that colleges will care less about what you have done and more about why and how you have done it. When you're choosing which activities to write about, focus on those that help tell the story of who you are. This means that you probably don’t have to mention the one time you worked backstage on the musical or the ten hours of community service you did freshman year and never thought about again until college applications rolled around. Instead, just focus on those that show growth, leadership, and dedication. If you think about it with that criteria, do you really have more than ten activities? If you are very concerned about making everything fit, see if you can group activities together. For example, if you have participated in several different volunteer activities, you can lump them together as one.The same thing goes for students who have played several different instruments and don’t have room to list them individually. You should also consider not filling up the list. I’ll repeat: It is okay to not fill up the whole list,especially if you're includingactivities that you can’t show to be significant. Why is this a bad idea? Admissions officers may think that you just signed up foractivities to pad your resume, and it may make them doubt your maturity and the sincerity ofyour involvement in the activities you have listed.
